AACC will join Anne Arundel County, the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO) in Operation Green Light to show support for veterans by lighting select areas green from Nov. 4 through 11. By shining a green light, we will let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported.
Take a moment of silence when you visit the POW/MIA tables located in the SUN Hawk’s Nest, Truxal Library and AMIL lobby. These tables serve as a remembrance for fallen, missing or imprisoned service members. The items on the table are symbolic representations of emotions or feelings by those service members or the family members left behind.
American flags will be placed around campus as a show of respect and appreciation for the legacy of service by veterans in our community.
The AACC Bookstore is offering a discount coupon for veterans for 20% off of one general merchandise item from Nov. 4 to 6. Coupons can be used both online at aaccbooks.com and in store. The history of Veterans Day is rooted in the loss and destruction of life resulting from World War I (1914-1918). The scale of loss was so great that it didn’t merely result in a new federal holiday but created a sea change in societal perceptions about humanity and the future. Symbolism, such as the famous red poppies, as well as the poem “In Flanders Field,” represents the beginnings of postmodernism and the way in which society grappled with such unfathomable devastation. This presentation by Ryan P. Trainor, former museum archivist for the National Guard Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., explores the origins of Veterans Day through the lens of popular symbolism and postmodern philosophy.
